A Quilt in the Making
2024
Early 2024, I was fortunate to be commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre to make a quilt to celebrate their 50th anniversary. I pieced together fabric blocks and hand made an improvised quilt. The blocks were were initially created together with participants from workshops both at the Arts Centre and with partners around the city of Coventry and its immediate neighbourhood.
Joining me on these 11 workshops was my textile assistant - the fabulous Julie Joannides! Together we spent time sharing our knowledge of hand stitching and quilt making with brilliant participants that attended the sessions either at Workshop Wednesdays at the Arts Centre, Foleshill Women’s Training, Kairos, the Chit Chat Group at Canley Community Centre or with the wonderful nursing team and staff from the Intensive Care Department at George Eliot Hospital.
‘A Quilt In The Making’ was exhibited at the Warwick Arts Centre foyer 3rd November – 15th December 2024. All the fabrics were donated or from my stash. It’s surprising what we can do with even the tiniest of fabric pieces! On 2nd Nov 2024 I had a conversation with the Arts Centre’s Director Doreen Foster about my practice and the process of making the quilt. It truly has been such a wonderful experience. Adele Mary Reed captured the afternoon. Huge thank you to her and to all the wonderful audience members. Also thanks to Gemma Wright for supporting the event’s success and of course to Doreen for her support and shared love of quilt making!
